Cinnamon: The Most Natural Weight Loss and Anti-Inflammatory Pill Around

Looking for something that can stabilize blood sugar and reduce food cravings? You may need to go no further than your pantry. Cinnamon actually stabilizes blood sugar and insulin levels, helping the body metabolize foods better. According to the Malta Independent, “Just ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon mixed in water or tea will help stabilize blood sugar for days — in one study, the group that took the cinnamon reported healthy blood sugar levels up to three weeks after consuming the cinnamon!”

Furthermore, an article in Women’s Weekly about a study shows that people who took 2000mg of cinnamon a day lost 300% more weight and 500% more belly fat than the placebo group. In the study, participants took 500 mg (one pill) before breakfast, 1000 mg before lunch, and 500 mg before dinner. Wal-Mart sells 500mg cinnamon supplements mixed with Chromium, another nutrient believed to help with weight loss.

According to Patrick Holford’s health blog, “[There are benefits to] the combination of [cinnamon and] chromium, which is well known to help stabilize blood sugar levels in diabetics at daily doses of 500mg or more. A study last year gave chromium to healthy overweight women, versus placebo, and found a reduction in food intake, hunger levels and fat cravings, and a tendency to decreased body weight. Supplementing cinnamon and chromium, together with a low Glycemic Load (GL) makes a lot of sense for those struggling with weight, sugar cravings or diabetes.”

There are 2 types of cinnamon — Cassia and Ceylon. Ceylon cinnamon is commonly called “true cinnamon” but it is more expensive, so drugstores and grocery stores normally sell Cassia cinnamon. However, both have health benefits. Additionally, About.com cites that “In traditional Chinese medicine, Cassia cinnamon is used for colds, flatulence, nausea, diarrhea, and painful menstrual periods. It’s also believed to improve energy, vitality, and circulation and be particularly useful for people who tend to feel hot in their upper body but have cold feet.”

Before taking cinnamon for health reasons, be sure to check with your doctor, especially if you are on a blood clotting medication, as high levels of a naturally occurring element in cinnamon may affect it.

  1. I never knew all these things about cinnamon! I may have to try it for circulation … my feet are always cold!

  2. This is a fascinating article…I had no idea cinnamon was so amazing! I added some to my coffee this morning.

  3. Natural weight loss supplements can help counteract this constant hunger and lead to healthy weight loss. Unbalanced hormones are a common cause of weight gain, therefore taking natural hormone balancers and herbal supplements would help to create a healthy weight loss regimen. Restoring your health allows you to lose weight naturally, without excess frustration and effort. It’s all about losing weight from the inside out.

    1. Well said, Dan. Thanks for visiting!

  4. I too had no idea Cinnamon was so amazing. I have been looking for a healthy way to loose weight since my schedule is so packed in that I am not able to get a good 30 mins of exercise. I’ve just begun this morning with taking Nature’s Bounty Cinnamon 2000 mg Plus Chromium and hope this will do the trick, besides eating healthy. I opened the capsules and put the cinnamon in my coffee and I have to say, it was delicious! I will keep you posted on results.

    Take care,

    1. Good luck! Healthy eating is key also. Get sugar out of your diet as much as possible and get rid of foods that cause inflammation, like wheat and dairy. Green tea can help with weight loss too and has lots of other health benefits as well!

  5. Just bought NB’s 2000 mcg bottle of cinnamon plus chromium. I am a type 2 diabetic with over a hundred pounds to lose. I have been on a low carb high fiber diet for almost a month and so far the blood sugars look great but I haven’t lost a single pound. I read up on Cinnamon with Chromium. I may be insulin resistant, so I decide to give it a shot, and with the pharmacy having a BOGO for this product, I invested and got the second bottle free. I am anxious to see if this helps. I am even considering weight loss surgery if this does not help.

    1. It sounds like you are on the right track. What does your low-carb, high-fiber diet consist of? Also are you exercising?

    2. I hope this works for you Adrienne!

      1. Me too. I have tried every pill, diet and fad there is. When I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2007, that’s when things really got bad. I have not been able to control my cravings, and after two different endocrinologists, I finally found one I like. He is never nagged me to lose the weight until now. Like I said, I have even looked into bariatric surgery (its still a possibility if only my hubby would not be so worried about the insurance.)I thought I would give this another shot for at least 6 months. If nothing has change weight wise, then I am going to go back to the surgeon and start the process. Nothing like a forced liquid diet for 6 weeks…

  6. Mostly lots and lots and lots of salad, lean proteins. Can’t do much in the way of excersize as I have Degenerative Disk Disease and persistant sciatica. But I walk whenever I can. Drink plenty of water and take vitamins.

    1. Walking is great, just moving your body as much as you can is the important part. It sounds like everything else you are doing is great too. I wouldn’t be surprised if the pounds start to come off after your blood sugars have been normalized for a while. If not, you might want to see a doctor to rule out a thyroid problem or anything else that could be a factor. Try not to get discouraged!

      1. I have already had the tests done on my thyroid and its perfectly normal. So that was ruled out a while ago. I am going to give my endo a call to see what he thinks about the CI and CH – I also have to watch my blood sugars very carefully if this stuff does what it says it does. I saw another website for a doctor that says cinnamon and chromium when taken correctly should cure type 2 diabetes in 4 weeks. That was his claim.

    2. Another Chronic DDD lady with Heart Disease. Inflammation, Cholesterol, Tri-gylcerides all at top levels and sugar cravings. Any help appreciated. Mary

  7. My first day on Cinnamon and Chromium and I have already seen results! I had my usual diet buster last night – ice cream. No cone, just a few scoops in a bowl. Now normally I would wake up with sugars in the 200-280 range. I took my first dose of CI + CH last night right before dinner (Chicken and stir fry veggies.) My sugar this morning was a surprisingly pleasant 147! I did my normal doses of Humalog and Levimir (40/40)and had an Atkins bar for breakfast. Also took my next dose of the CI + CH. Tested two hours after breakfast and my sugar was 98! So far I am very pleased with the results. My hunger cravings have been minimal and I am hoping this new supplement will jump start my weight loss.

    1. That is great!! I hope it keeps working for you. Keep us posted!
